| The larynx joins the back of the throat to the trachea (windpipe). The
vocal cords are in the larynx. Laryngitis means inflammation of the larynx. It is
usually due to a viral infection (viral laryngitis). A more severe laryngitis is
sometimes due to bacteria. An antibiotic may be advised if the infection is severe, if it
is not easing after a few days, or if your immune system is not working properly (for
example, if you have had your spleen removed or if you are taking chemotherapy, etc). Bronchitis is the inflammation of the lining
of the bronchial tubes. When the bronchi are inflamed and/or infected, less air is able to
flow to and from the lungs and a heavy mucus or phlegm is coughed up. Many people suffer a
brief attack of acute bronchitis with cough and mucus production when they have severe
colds. Acute bronchitis is usually not associated with fever.
Rhintis is an inflammation of the nose. Symptoms of rhinitis often include sneezing,
congestion, and runny nose.
